Super League discusses centralized television rights redistribution
The Super League has initiated discussions regarding the centralized management and redistribution of television rights. During the first working group meeting, the primary focus was on increasing financial support for smaller clubs.
Super League President Giannis Alafouzos stated that the goal is to prioritize the strengthening of smaller teams rather than basing distribution on commerciality or league standings, noting that a purely commercial model would make significant subsidies for smaller clubs difficult. Alafouzos indicated that if a general consensus is not reached among all clubs, the league may proceed with a collective agreement involving only the teams that agree to the proposal, potentially involving 7-8 clubs.
To assist in the process, the league intends to consult with PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and Deloitte on distribution models and will contact the European League and the Players Association to study how other European leagues manage their revenues. While PAOK expressed support for centralized management provided there is clarity on the process and international sales prospects, other clubs like Olympiakos have raised points regarding total revenue, commerciality, and international distribution models.
