Super Mario 64 mystery potentially solved by computational analysis
A programmer known as Mochi64 has released a computational study that may resolve a 30-year-old mystery in the Nintendo 64 game Super Mario 64. The research focuses on a blurry 32-by-32-pixel plaque located in the courtyard of Princess Peach’s Castle.
For decades, the gaming community has debated the inscription, with many believing it spelled “L is real 2401,” a popular urban legend suggesting the character Luigi was hidden in the game. However, Mochi64’s analysis suggests the text most likely reads “Eternal Star” on the first line and “We hope so” on the second.
Rather than using traditional upscaling, which can introduce artificial details, the researcher used a reconstruction method. This involved testing over 1.2 million combinations of phrases and fonts—including approximately 530 different typefaces—to see which best matched the original texture. Using AI tools like Claude and GPU-accelerated processing, the study identified Adobe Palatino Bold Italic as the font with the highest statistical match to the game’s original assets.
