Supergirl box office misses targets; DC Studios says it stays on course

The new DC Universe film Supergirl earned about $68 million worldwide, including $38 million in the United States, far below the $170 million production cost and the roughly $50 million domestic opening expected. Analysts estimate the film could generate losses exceeding $100 million, highlighting a significant shortfall for Warner Bros. and DC.

DC Studios co‑CEO Peter Safran acknowledged the disappointing debut, stating the film “did not meet our box‑office expectations,” but emphasized that Supergirl remains a key part of the studio’s long‑term strategy. He reiterated confidence in the broader DC Universe plan despite the setback.

Separate commentary noted that screenwriter Ana Nogueira’s interpretation of Tom King’s comic influenced a major change to the film’s ending, sparking discussion among fans about creative decisions. Critical reviews described the movie as earnest but uneven, noting strong performances alongside concerns about pacing and action.
