Supergirl movie draws criticism for plot twist and soundtrack choice

Warner Bros.' "Supergirl" opened in theaters on June 26 and quickly received mixed reviews. Rotten Tomatoes shows a critic score in the low‑50s while audience scores are higher, around 76 %. Critics and viewers have criticized several aspects of the film.

Writer Ann Nogueira explained that the decision to have Kara (Supergirl) kill the villain Krem deviates from the source comic, where Krem is imprisoned and later killed by an older Ruthye. She said the change was intended to give Kara her own moral agency, a point emphasized by producers James Gunn and Peter Safran. Director Craig Gillespie also discussed the fight scene set to a slowed‑down cover of Jimmy Eat World’s “The Middle,” noting it sparked debate over the song choice and its tonal fit.

Both the plot alteration and the music decision have become focal points of the film’s divisive reception, highlighting broader discussions about the treatment of women‑led superhero movies.
