Supergirl to debut on HBO Max following box office underperformance

Warner Bros. Discovery has announced that the DC Studios film ‘Supergirl’ will make its global streaming debut on HBO Max on September 10, 2026. The film is also scheduled to premiere on the HBO linear channel on September 12.

Following its theatrical release in late June, the film underperformed significantly at the box office. It grossed approximately $126 million worldwide against a production budget estimated between $170 million and $185 million. Industry reports suggest the film may face losses ranging from $100 million to $200 million when accounting for marketing and advertising expenses.

Directed by Craig Gillespie and starring Milly Alcock, the film is the second installment in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe. While critics provided mixed reviews, with a 53% score on Rotten Tomatoes, an American Sign Language (ASL) version will also be available on HBO Max on the streaming launch date.
