Supermarine Spitfire returns to Czech Republic after 78 years

A historic Supermarine Spitfire Mk. IXe fighter aircraft has returned to the Czech Republic to join the permanent collection of the Točná Aviation Museum. The aircraft, manufactured in 1945 with serial number SL633, previously served with the 312th Czechoslovak Fighter Squadron of the British Royal Air Force (RAF).

Following World War II, the plane was part of the Czechoslovak Air Force under the designation JT-10 and was flown by notable pilot Karel Pošta. After leaving Czechoslovakia in 1948, the aircraft was transferred to Israel and later to Burma, where it served as a static display. After undergoing extensive reconstruction in the United Kingdom and flying in the United States, it was recently acquired from Australia by entrepreneur Ivo Lukačovič for approximately 81 million CZK.

The aircraft was officially presented to the public at Točná Airport, where it performed flight demonstrations alongside a Hawker Hurricane. Czech President Petr Pavel attended the event, describing the return as an expression of respect for the pilots who flew and maintained such machines.
