Supermarket parking enforcement leads to fines for customers
Supermarket parking lots in Austria and Germany are increasingly utilizing automated license plate recognition to enforce parking time limits, leading to contractual penalties for customers.
In Villach, Austria, the Supernova shopping center recently implemented automated monitoring. Customers have reported receiving fines of up to 120 euros for exceeding the three-hour limit. Management stated that the goal is to ensure parking availability for shoppers and noted that they attempt to find customer-friendly solutions if a violation is clearly linked to a long stay at the center.
In Germany, parking at retailers such as Aldi, Lidl, or Kaufland can result in private contractual penalties ranging from 15 to 60 euros. The ADAC advises that consumers should check for clear signage before paying, as disputes may be valid if rules are not clearly displayed or if the vehicle was not parked by the registered owner.
