Supermercados Toledo reaches agreement to pay overdue wages

Supermercados Toledo has reached an agreement to resolve a labor dispute regarding unpaid wages, following several days of work stoppages and protests across the Mar del Plata region. The company committed to paying the remaining 60% of July salaries by Friday, August 14, after having initially paid only 40% of the owed amounts.

The financial instability of the historic supermarket chain was highlighted during hearings at the Buenos Aires Ministry of Labor. According to Guillermo Bianchi, general secretary of the Sindicato de Empleados de Comercio de Mar del Plata y Zona Atlántica (Secza), the company reportedly had to sell an asset to cover the outstanding wages.

While the agreement allowed workers in Necochea, Mar del Plata, and Balcarce to resume their duties to preserve social peace and protect jobs, labor unions remain on alert. The crisis threatens the future of approximately 1,800 direct jobs. A permanent dialogue table has been established between the company and various unions, including Camioneros and UATRE, to monitor ongoing labor and salary conditions.
