Supernova SN 2026aaiv discovered in galaxy NGC 7331

A Type Ia supernova, designated SN 2026aaiv, was discovered on September 1, 2026, in the spiral galaxy NGC 7331. Located approximately 45 million light-years away in the constellation Pegasus, the galaxy is noted for its similarities in size and mass to the Milky Way.

The event has attracted significant attention from both professional astronomers and amateur astrophotographers. Notable captures include work by Andrew McCarthy and Tom Masterson of the Mount Wilson Observatory. As of September 11, 2026, the supernova was recorded at magnitude 15.7 and was noted to be continuing to brighten.
