Supernova SN 2026gzf discovery challenges stellar explosion models

Astronomers have observed a rare and unusual stellar explosion, identified as supernova SN 2026gzf, which is challenging existing models of how massive stars die. The event began with a brief X-ray flash, cataloged as EP260321a, detected by the Einstein Probe on March 21, 2026. This flash is believed to be a “shock breakout,” the moment a collapsing star's shock wave breaks through its surface.

While SN 2026gzf is a Type Ic supernova—a category typically associated with highly energetic explosions and powerful gamma-ray bursts—this specific event lacked any detectable gamma radiation or typical high-energy jets. Follow-up observations using the Chandra X-ray Observatory and the Very Large Array suggest the explosion may have involved a “choked” or weak jet rather than the standard high-speed jets seen in similar energetic supernovae.

This discovery represents only the second successful observation of such a shock breakout in two decades. The event, located in a galaxy approximately 515 million light-years away, was tracked by an international team of researchers using various ground- and space-based telescopes, including the Fraunhofer Telescope at the Wendelstein Observatory.
