Supernova SN 2026gzf’s shock breakout captured in unprecedented detail

In March 2026, the Chinese Einstein Probe satellite recorded a brief soft‑X‑ray flash (designated EP260321a) from a galaxy about 500 million light‑years away. Rapid follow‑up by ground and space telescopes—including NOIRLab facilities, the Dark Energy Camera in Chile and the Vera C. Rubin Observatory—identified the source as a broad‑lined Type Ic supernova, later named SN 2026gzf.

Two independent research teams, led by Brendan O’Connor (Carnegie Mellon University) and Jillian Rastinejad (University of Maryland), independently confirmed the event as an X‑ray “shock breakout,” the moment the shock wave from the collapsing star reaches the surface. The breakout was the faintest ever observed for this supernova class and, unlike similar explosions, produced no gamma‑ray burst or relativistic jet, suggesting a “choked” jet scenario. This marks only the second confirmed X‑ray shock breakout in the past two decades, providing a rare view of a supernova’s earliest moments.

The discovery results from a coordinated international effort involving Chinese, American and Chilean observatories, highlighting the power of rapid, multi‑wavelength observations for studying extreme stellar deaths.
