Supplements like melatonin and saw palmetto may impact libido
Certain wellness supplements commonly used to improve sleep or manage hair loss may inadvertently decrease libido by altering hormone levels.
Melatonin, frequently used for sleep and relaxation, may negatively impact the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. This interaction can suppress reproductive hormones, such as luteinizing hormone, which is linked to sexual interest.
Additionally, saw palmetto—often taken to treat hair loss or symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)—may have the opposite effect of its intended use by potentially lowering libido. Other supplements noted for similar potential effects include St. John’s wort and licorice root.
