Support networks expand for families of individuals with disabilities in Japan
Community organizations in Japan are providing specialized support networks for families managing illness and disabilities. In Akita, the Akita Kyodai Network focuses on supporting siblings of individuals with disabilities. These siblings often suppress their own emotions to avoid adding stress to their parents, and the network provides a space for them to share their experiences and find emotional relief.
In Sendai, the Honopia project, a collaboration between the social welfare corporation Ainomitsu and the Sendai City Health and Welfare Bureau, held a dedicated meeting for families of children requiring medical care or living with severe physical and intellectual disabilities. Unlike typical sessions that include professionals, this event was designed exclusively for family members to speak freely without the pressure of interacting with external supporters. Participants discussed topics such as managing sibling dynamics, school preparation, and navigating insurance, noting the importance of having a space to express vulnerabilities.
