Supreme Court allows White House ballroom construction to resume
The U.S. Supreme Court has issued a temporary administrative stay allowing the Trump administration to resume construction of a new ballroom at the White House. Chief Justice John Roberts issued the order to provide the full Court more time to review an emergency request from the administration regarding the project.
The legal dispute centers on whether the President can unilaterally proceed with the construction of the 90,000-square-foot facility, which is intended to replace the White House East Wing. A lower federal court had previously ruled the construction unlawful, citing a lack of required Congressional authorization. The National Trust for Historic Preservation has also challenged the project, arguing it requires legislative approval.
The administration maintains that the project is a matter of national security, describing the facility as a critical complex that will include bomb shelters, a hospital, and a drone port. Construction is reportedly moving at a rapid pace, with a 250-person crew working 20 hours a day, seven days a week. As of mid-August, the project, valued between $400 million and $600 million, is estimated to be 65% complete.
