Supreme Court backs mediation in Sunjay Kapur family inheritance dispute
The Supreme Court of India said the mediation over the late industrialist Sunjay Kapur’s family trust is progressing satisfactorily. A bench led by Justices J.B. Pardiwala and K. Vinod Chandran noted six mediation sessions have been held, with former Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud acting as mediator and a senior chartered accountant and tax expert assisting. The court extended the mediation deadline to 2 November and urged the parties to continue cooperating with an “open mind and open heart.”
The dispute involves the RK Family Trust and assets estimated at around ₹30,000 crore, contested by Rani Kapur, the 80‑year‑old mother of the deceased, and Priya Sachdev Kapur, his third wife. The court also ordered that mediation expenses be paid by the RK Family Trust, emphasizing that legal remedies remain available if mediation fails.
