Supreme Court CJI reprimands Noida magistrate over student protest notice

Chief Justice of India Suryakant reprimanded an executive magistrate in Greater Noida during a Supreme Court hearing on Wednesday regarding a notice issued to a student involved in a protest. The court questioned how the magistrate could issue such a notice when the Supreme Court had previously quashed FIRs related to student protests and prohibited coercive action against students participating in such demonstrations.

The notice was issued to Akshat Tripathi, a student at Gautam Buddha University, following a protest led by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. The magistrate had requested a personal bond of 5 lakh rupees and two sureties to maintain peace, based on police allegations that the student incited others to join the protest and spread anti-government misinformation.

Following the matter being raised by senior advocate Vishwajit Bhattacharya, the Supreme Court noted that no magistrate can violate the orders of the apex court. The controversial notice was subsequently withdrawn.
