Supreme Court clears draft for Bhopal Master Plan
The Supreme Court has granted permission to the state government to publish the draft of the Bhopal Master Plan, addressing a delay that has lasted approximately 21 years. The government noted that the previous master plan expired in 2005, and a new draft intended for 2031 has been prepared.
Before the final plan is officially released, the government must inform the Supreme Court and obtain further permission. The implementation process is expected to take at least three months to allow for public notification, the filing of claims and objections, and subsequent hearings.
During the proceedings, the Court expressed dissatisfaction regarding the effectiveness of sealing actions taken by the Bhopal Municipal Corporation against commercial activities operating in residential areas. Residents alleged that some establishments are sealed in the morning only to reopen by the evening. The Court directed the Municipal Corporation to ensure more effective enforcement of sealing orders and declined the formation of a new committee, instructing the corporation to continue under its existing system and submit reports. Approximately 62,500 establishments are currently operating under the outdated 2005 plan.
