Supreme Court clears former PM Manmohan Singh in coal block case
On 29 July 2026 the Supreme Court of India accepted the Central Bureau of Investigation’s closure reports and set aside a 2015 Special Court order that had summoned former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as an accused in the Talabira‑II coal block allocation case. The bench, headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana, held there were no cogent reasons to reject the CBI’s findings and that the proceedings had become infructuous after Singh’s death in December 2024.
The case related to the 2005 allocation of the Talabira‑II coal block in Odisha and had also named industrialist Kumar Mangalam Birla, former Coal Secretary P. C. Parakh and three others as accused. With the Supreme Court’s decision, all criminal proceedings against Singh and the co‑accused were formally closed, giving them a clean chit.
