Supreme Court criticizes Uttar Pradesh Police over FIR handling
The Supreme Court of India has issued a severe reprimand to the Uttar Pradesh Police regarding the handling of a criminal First Information Report (FIR). The court questioned why an accused individual, who was reportedly apprehended at the scene and handed over to the police, was initially listed as ‘unknown’ in the FIR.
Expressing deep dissatisfaction, the bench remarked that the police appear to have ‘some agenda in everything,’ suggesting that such practices undermine public trust in law enforcement. The court characterized certain investigative actions as a ‘cover-up job’ and noted that the identity of the suspect, later identified as ‘Tushar,’ was only added to the police affidavit after the initial filing.
In its critique, the court suggested that it might be better to dissolve the Uttar Pradesh Police entirely or mandate the involvement of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in all their investigations to ensure transparency. The bench has directed the concerned police officer to appear personally at the next hearing to provide a detailed explanation and a more satisfactory affidavit.
