Supreme Court delays Asaram Bapu's bail hearing after AIIMS report

The Supreme Court of India heard a plea by self‑styled godman and convicted rapist Asaram Bapu for interim bail on medical grounds. The bench examined a medical report from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) which concluded that Asaram does not require hospitalisation but needs round‑the‑clock care from trained caregivers. The report listed several health issues, including coronary artery disease, osteoporosis, chronic hyponatraemia, thalassemia and recurrent gastrointestinal bleeding.

The court adjourned the matter, scheduling a further hearing for early August. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Rajasthan government, opposed the bail request, questioning the credibility of the medical claims. Asaram’s appeal challenges the Rajasthan High Court’s decision to uphold his conviction for sexually assaulting a minor in 2013.
