Manipur Chief Secretary ordered to report on unnatural deaths in relief camps
The Supreme Court of India has directed the Manipur Chief Secretary to submit a detailed report regarding 25 reported unnatural deaths in relief camps housing victims of the 2023 ethnic violence. A bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant expressed concern over the lack of post-mortem examinations, noting that out of several reported deaths, autopsies were conducted in only 20 cases.
The Court also demanded clarification on the low compensation amounts, ranging from 20,000 to 30,000 rupees, provided to families of those who died unnaturally. Furthermore, the bench questioned why significant steps had not been taken to implement recommendations from the Justice Gita Mittal committee regarding the safety and dignity of internally displaced persons.
In addition to the report from the Chief Secretary, the Manipur State Legal Services Authority (MSLSA) has been ordered to file a status report and ensure that First Information Reports (FIRs) are registered and investigated for all unnatural death cases. The Court emphasized the need for adequate medical facilities and essential supplies for those residing in the camps.
