Supreme Court Dismisses Plea for SIT Probe into Former Judge Yashwant Varma Case

The Supreme Court of India rejected a petition filed by advocate Ghanshyam Upadhyay that sought registration of an FIR and a court‑monitored Special Investigation Team probe into the alleged discovery of large amounts of cash that burned during a fire at the Delhi residence of former Delhi High Court judge Yashwant Varma in March 2025. A two‑judge bench led by Justices P.S. Narasimha and Alok Aradhe described the petition as an attempt at “cheap publicity” and declined to entertain it.

The controversy began when bundles of currency notes were seen burning in the fire. An in‑house inquiry panel, appointed by then Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, recommended Varma’s resignation; he stepped down in April 2026 before parliamentary removal proceedings could be completed. The Supreme Court also ruled that it would not interfere with the Lok Sabha Speaker‑appointed judges’ inquiry panel.
