Supreme Court Expected to Reject Trump's Carroll Rehearing Petition

President Donald Trump is seeking to overturn the $5 million (plus interest) judgment awarded to E. Jean Carroll after a jury found him liable for sexual abuse and defamation. He has filed a rehearing petition with the U.S. Supreme Court, asking the justices to take up the case and potentially reverse the award.

The Court’s docket shows the petition was “distributed” to the justices, a routine step before a decision. While the Court is on summer recess, it routinely issues order lists that largely deny petitions; the next list is slated for August 17. Legal experts note that successful rehearing petitions are extremely rare, suggesting a denial is likely. Carroll’s lawyers highlighted that only once in the past 75 years has the Court fully reconsidered a denied petition.

If denied, the judgment and the funds already released to Carroll will stand, ending Trump’s attempt to reclaim the money.
