Rahul Gandhi receives Supreme Court relief in disproportionate assets case

The Supreme Court of India has granted interim relief to Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, by directing the Allahabad High Court to defer proceedings in a disproportionate assets case.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice V. Mohana also ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to refrain from submitting any reports to the High Court regarding the matter for the time being.

The case originated from a petition filed by S. Vignesh Shishir, a BJP worker from Karnataka, who alleged that Gandhi possesses assets disproportionate to his known sources of income. The Allahabad High Court had previously directed central agencies to verify these claims and file progress reports.

During the hearing, the Supreme Court emphasized the principle of natural justice, noting that the High Court appeared to have issued directions without providing Gandhi an opportunity to be heard. The top court has issued notices to the complainant, the CBI, and the ED, seeking their responses.
