Supreme Court halts promotion of 40 police officers
The Supreme Court has stayed the execution of a Court of Appeal judgment that ordered the promotion of 40 police officers. The stay comes following an appeal by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno.
The legal dispute originated from a 2021 amnesty programme established by the Police Management Board. The programme made officers enlisted between December 2008 and 2020, who also held first degrees, eligible for promotion. The 40 officers, who held the rank of Chief Inspector, argued they were unfairly excluded from this arrangement while junior colleagues and other personnel received promotions.
After the High Court in Kumasi initially dismissed the officers' lawsuit, the Court of Appeal overturned that decision and directed the police authorities to promote the officers to the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP). However, the Supreme Court’s recent order suspends the implementation of that ruling until the current appeal is resolved.
