Supreme Court issues notices over Delhi protests and voter list allegations
The Supreme Court of India has issued notices to the Election Commission of India, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, and opposition leaders regarding ongoing protests in Delhi. The legal proceedings follow demonstrations demanding the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner and allegations of widespread irregularities in the Special Intensive Review (SIR) of voter lists.
Opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and members of the INDIA alliance, have petitioned the court to investigate the alleged mass deletion of names from voter rolls. They have requested an independent audit of these changes by a committee of experts led by a retired Supreme Court judge.
In a related development, Bollywood actor Imran Khan, a US citizen holding an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card, is reportedly facing a ‘Leave India Notice’ following his participation in a protest in Mumbai on October 10. The protest, organized by the Cockroach Janata Party, called for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. BJP leader Kirt Somaiya has provided evidence to police regarding the actor's speeches, alleging misuse of OCI status.
