Lorenzetti defends Cristina Kirchner disqualification

Supreme Court Justice Ricardo Lorenzetti has defended the disqualification of former President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner from holding public office. Speaking in an interview, Lorenzetti clarified that the Supreme Court did not rule on the constitutionality of the perpetual disqualification or the merits of the underlying conviction in the Vialidad case. Instead, the Court dismissed a complaint because it lacked sufficient legal foundation.

Lorenzetti emphasized that the disqualification is a penalty already established in the Penal Code and noted that the former president is not proscribed. He further addressed the current state of the judiciary, noting that the Supreme Court is operating with only three members despite the legal requirement for five. He proposed expanding the Court to include more members to ensure greater diversity and a better distribution of power.
