Supreme Court Justice Ricardo Lorenzetti faces protests at UBA

Supreme Court Justice Ricardo Lorenzetti was the target of a protest by student groups and environmental activists during the opening of the XI Argentine Environmental Law Congress at the University of Buenos Aires (UBA). The demonstration interrupted the event, forcing its suspension.

Protesters criticized the judiciary, specifically targeting Lorenzetti regarding the protection of natural resources and the application of the University Financing Law. Activists questioned the judicial branch's response to the needs of retirees, people with disabilities, and university workers facing deteriorating salaries. Environmental groups also challenged Lorenzetti's participation in the congress, citing previous court rulings related to land laws and the protection against the foreign ownership of rural lands.

In response to criticisms regarding the court's environmental record, Lorenzetti defended the Supreme Court's role, stating that the institution has a historical position of protecting natural resources. He cited past judicial interventions, such as the Riachuelo cleanup and the Glacier Law, as evidence of the court's commitment to environmental preservation.
