Supreme Court mandates security audit for women in Delhi-NCR

The Supreme Court of India has issued strict directives to enhance the safety of women and minors in the Delhi-NCR region. Taking suo motu cognizance of recent incidents, a bench comprising Justice J.B. Pardiwala and Justice K. Vinod Chandran ordered the Delhi Police to conduct an immediate security audit and survey of sensitive areas.

Key mandates include the creation of sensitivity maps for every police district within four weeks, based on National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, local intelligence, and past complaints. The court directed the Delhi Police Commissioner to form specialized teams for each district, led by officers at the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) or higher. To improve physical security, the court ordered an audit of lighting and CCTV systems at public parks, metro stations, bus terminals, and railway stations.

Additionally, the court requested a detailed report from the Registrar General of the Delhi High Court regarding the status of fast-track special courts and POCSO courts. The police must also provide information on the utilization of the National Database on Sexual Offenders (NDSO) and the Investigation Tracking System for Sexual Offences (ITSSO).
