Supreme Court may order CBI probe into Sai Krishna custodial death

The Supreme Court of India has indicated it may intervene to order a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the custodial death of Gade Sai Krishna if the Andhra Pradesh High Court does not do so. The court is currently awaiting a judgment from the High Court regarding a habeas corpus petition and the potential for a CBI-led investigation.

In its recent proceedings, the Supreme Court directed that notices be issued to the Director General of Police, the Commissioner of Police, and the Assistant Commissioner of Police involved, requiring them to submit responses and records. The court also ordered the impleadment of the CBI as a respondent due to the seriousness of the case. Additionally, the apex court requested the transmission of records from the Nagaraj case and other related matters to be registered as transfer cases.

The matter has drawn political reactions, with former Chief Minister Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy describing the court’s intervention as a setback for the current government led by N. Chandrababu Naidu.
