Supreme Court may weigh recognition of out-of-state carry permits
Legal challenges are mounting to force states to recognize concealed-carry permits issued by other states, a matter that may reach the Supreme Court during the upcoming term. While many states practice “constitutional carry” or recognize out-of-state permits, ten states currently reject permits from other jurisdictions.
Plaintiffs argue that refusing to recognize these permits violates the Second Amendment. The Liberty Justice Center has petitioned the high court, arguing that current views in the Eighth Circuit effectively confine Second Amendment rights to state borders.
In a related legal action, Gun Owners of America filed a lawsuit in the United States District Court for the District of Oregon against the city of Salem and Marion County Sheriff Nick Hunter. The suit seeks to overturn Oregon’s ban on non-residents carrying firearms, asserting that constitutional rights to bear arms should not cease at state lines.
