Supreme Court of Canada holds first ceremonial opening in 39 years

To mark its 150th anniversary, the Supreme Court of Canada held its first ceremonial opening of the judicial year in 39 years on October 6, 2025. The last such ceremony occurred in 1986 under Chief Justice Brian Dickson.

The event featured the debut of new ceremonial robes for the justices. Designed to be simple and modern, the black robes include red piping and were crafted entirely within Canada to showcase domestic craftsmanship. Chief Justice Richard Wagner stated the new attire aims to preserve judicial dignity while reflecting Canadian values of openness and accessibility.

Additionally, Chief Justice Wagner announced the establishment of the Historical Society of the Supreme Court of Canada. Co-chaired by former registrar Anne Roland and former justice Thomas Cromwell, the society is tasked with promoting education, fostering research, and preserving the court's history and legacy.
