Supreme Court of India advises young lawyers on professional responsibility
The Supreme Court of India has issued guidance to young lawyers regarding professional responsibility and the importance of mentorship.
In one instance, a bench comprising Justice PS Narasimha and Justice Alok Aradhe dismissed a writ petition filed by a young advocate seeking to increase the retirement age of teachers. Justice Narasimha advised the lawyer to consider the weight of litigation, noting that converting policy issues into Public Interest Litigations (PILs) without careful thought contributes to court overcrowding. He emphasized that lawyers represent the nation and must recognize the responsibilities inherent in the profession.
Separately, a bench including Justice B. V. Nagarathna and Justice Augustine George Masih advised young members of the Bar to train under senior advocates. The court expressed concern over graduates immediately opening independent offices without developing essential soft skills and the “niceties of the profession.” The justices noted that observing court proceedings and working with seniors is vital for learning advocacy skills and avoiding common mistakes.
