Supreme Court of India calls for national solid waste management overhaul

India's Supreme Court has called for a national overhaul of solid waste management systems, emphasizing that the country requires a complete audit and upgrade to meet the standards of the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026. The court criticized a societal mindset of being ‘entitled to generate but not to cooperate’ in managing waste, noting that the complexity of modern trash—including electronic and hazardous waste—has grown beyond the capacity of sanitation workers alone to manage.

In Chennai, local challenges persist as residents demand action against open dumping and conservancy workers seek permanent employment. While some areas have seen improved garbage clearance through privatization, officials in the Anna Nagar Zone report ongoing issues with unpunctual staff and a lack of waste segregation by the public. To combat this, the Greater Chennai Corporation has launched a 40-day awareness program for 50,000 households, mandating that bulk waste generators begin segregating waste on September 1.
