Supreme Court of India upholds custodial death conviction in Karnataka
The Supreme Court of India has upheld the conviction of police officials involved in a custodial death case in Karnataka. The ruling confirmed that a combination of ocular testimony and medical evidence proved the prosecution’s case regarding the death of two individuals who were beaten inside a police station.
The Court emphasized that because the deceased were brought into the station alive but were found dead, the burden of proof shifted to the accused to explain the circumstances of the deaths. The Court rejected the false defenses presented by the officials, noting that such actions reinforced their guilt.
