Supreme Court orders sealing of 16,000 illegal properties in Meerut
The Supreme Court of India has directed the Uttar Pradesh government to seal and demolish over 16,000 illegal properties in Meerut. The ruling follows findings regarding unauthorized constructions and the illegal conversion of residential properties for commercial use.
A bench comprising Justices JB Pardiwala and KV Viswanathan noted that in Zone-A alone, 16,726 structures were identified as illegal or unauthorized. This includes 12,907 residential buildings, 874 residential-cum-non-residential structures, and 2,945 non-residential constructions. The court emphasized the need for prompt action to prevent potential casualties from dilapidated structures that might collapse.
Additionally, the court has formed a judicial commission, led by former Supreme Court judge Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia, to investigate illegal developments in Uldepur. The commission will examine the nature of the land where these unauthorized residential colonies were established.
