Supreme Court President defends medical insurance budget

Supreme Court President Hugo Aguilar Ortiz has responded to criticisms from President Claudia Sheinbaum regarding the reinstatement of major medical expense insurance within the judiciary. Sheinbaum had suggested the Court was ‘bewitched’ after ministers approved the return of these benefits, which were previously removed under austerity policies.

Aguilar Ortiz clarified that the insurance is intended for 288 mid-to-high-level officials rather than the nine ministers. He stated that the provision of these benefits is strictly conditional on the availability of sufficient budgetary resources.

The Court has requested a budget of 6,104 million pesos for 2027, representing a 17.2 percent nominal increase over the current year. Aguilar Ortiz explained that this increase would cover a 17.21 percent salary adjustment and a 4.5 percent increase in operating expenses.
