STF President Edson Fachin postpones trial regarding André Mendonça

Edson Fachin, President of the Brazilian Supreme Federal Court (STF), has removed the trial regarding Minister André Mendonça's conduct from the upcoming plenary session scheduled for September 23. The investigation concerns Mendonça's role as rapporteur in the 'Master case,' which emerged from the Federal Police's 'Operation Compliance Zero' investigating financial fraud and corruption involving former banker Daniel Vorcaro.

The decision follows an extraordinary session where Minister Gilmar Mendes raised a procedural question, arguing that the investigation into Mendonça and a separate investigation into a supposed link between Minister Alexandre de Moraes and Daniel Vorcaro are related and should be judged together. During a previous vote on this matter, Minister Flávio Dino requested a stay of proceedings (pedido de vista) while the court was split 4 to 3 on whether to separate the cases.

Internal tensions within the STF have escalated, with Minister Mendes publicly criticizing Mendonça on social media. Additionally, Fachin canceled a separate plenary session on Thursday to prevent further personal confrontations between ministers. The court is currently facing an institutional crisis stemming from the disclosure of messages involving Vorcaro and Minister Moraes.
