Supreme Court quashes FIRs against Samay Raina and four others

The Supreme Court of India has quashed all First Information Reports (FIRs) and criminal proceedings against comedian Samay Raina and four others following a controversy involving insensitive remarks about persons with disabilities on the show ‘India’s Got Latent’.

The bench, led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, granted relief to Raina, Vipul Goyal, Balraj Paramjeet Singh Ghai, Sonali Thakkar, and Nishant Jagdish Tanwar. The court noted that the group had complied with previous judicial directions, which included conducting awareness programs and fundraising for individuals with disabilities, specifically those affected by Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).

The court praised the respondents' efforts, stating, “Once there are genuine efforts, positive results are bound to be there. They are very bright youngsters.” While the criminal cases against these five individuals are closed, the Supreme Court indicated it would continue to examine the broader issue of regulating online content and will seek suggestions from persons with disabilities to establish safeguards and sensitivity standards.
