Supreme Court rejects Asaram’s plea for medical parole extension
The Supreme Court of India has rejected a plea by Asaram Bapu seeking an extension of his medical parole. The court directed him to surrender by 5 p.m. on Tuesday following the expiration of his current parole period.
Asaram is serving a life sentence in Jodhpur Central Jail after being convicted in a 2013 case involving the sexual assault of a minor. His legal counsel had requested additional time on medical grounds, noting that he was undergoing treatment at the Government Dhanwantari Ayurvedic Hospital in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh.
While declining the extension, the Supreme Court instructed the Rajasthan government to ensure his medical requirements are met. The court has scheduled a hearing for November 6 at 2 p.m. to consider his appeal against his original conviction. To facilitate this, the Registry has been directed to summon both physical and digital trial court records.
