Supreme Court directs Delhi Police to prioritize women's safety in Delhi-NCR

The Supreme Court of India has taken suo motu cognizance of recent sexual assault and rape incidents in the Delhi-NCR region, expressing serious concern over the safety of women and children. A bench comprising Justices J. B. Pardiwala and K. Vinod Chandran emphasized that law enforcement must prioritize crime prevention over post-incident response.

The court directed the Delhi Police and the Union Ministry of Home Affairs to submit formal responses within four weeks. The justices stressed the necessity of instilling fear in criminals and anti-social elements to act as a deterrent, noting that authorities should not hesitate to take strict action even in the face of potential human rights criticisms.

Additional observations included critiques of current policing methods. The court questioned the effectiveness of CCTV surveillance without continuous monitoring and criticized the practice of stationary police vehicles, urging increased active beat patrolling. The bench highlighted the need for women to feel safe at all hours, including late at night, while traveling via roads or the metro.
