Supreme Court Review Sought for Rocklin School's Parental Notification Rule
The Center for American Liberty has filed an amicus brief with the U.S. Supreme Court in the case of Rocklin Unified School District v. Public Employment Relations Board. The brief urges the Court to grant certiorari to overturn a decision by California’s Public Employment Relations Board (PERB) that blocked the district’s policy requiring parents to be notified when their children request gender‑related accommodations, such as name changes, pronoun use, or bathroom access.
The brief argues that parents hold a constitutional right to direct the upbringing, health, and education of their children and that requiring parental notice for decisions about social transition—viewed as a substantial psychological intervention—protects family integrity. It also contends that PERB’s ruling gives teachers’ unions an effective veto over elected school‑board policies, potentially expanding union control over core educational matters.
The case, if heard by the Supreme Court, could set a precedent for parental‑rights and union‑influence issues in public schools beyond California.
