Supreme Court revives SAVE voter citizenship verification database
The U.S. Supreme Court has temporarily revived the Systemic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) database, allowing the Trump administration to use the system to verify voter citizenship ahead of the November general election.
Originally designed 40 years ago to verify the immigration status of noncitizens seeking public benefits, the database has been overhauled by the current administration. These changes include linking the system with Social Security Administration records and enabling state and local officials to conduct bulk searches of voter records.
Wyoming Secretary of State Chuck Gray expressed support for the ruling, stating that voter list maintenance is a priority for his administration. However, the League of Women Voters and the Electronic Privacy Information Center have challenged the modifications in federal court, arguing that outdated records in the expanded database risk disenfranchising eligible voters, particularly newly naturalized citizens.
