Supreme Court stays Twisha Sharma death case trial in Bhopal

The Supreme Court of India has stayed the ongoing trial in the death case of former model and actress Twisha Sharma, which was being conducted in a Bhopal court. A bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi issued notices to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Samarth Singh, and Giribala Singh regarding a petition to transfer the trial to Delhi.

The transfer plea was filed by the deceased’s father, Navnidhi Sharma, who expressed concerns that a fair trial could not be achieved in Madhya Pradesh. The petitioner cited the influence of the accused mother-in-law, Giribala Singh, a former district judge, alleging she could potentially influence witnesses. The court ordered that while trial proceedings on merits are stayed, pending bail applications for the respondents must be decided within two weeks.

Twisha Sharma died at her matrimonial home in Bhopal on May 12, 2026. Her family has alleged she was subjected to domestic violence and harassment over dowry demands. The CBI is currently investigating the case, which involves charges of dowry harassment and abetment to suicide against her husband, Samarth Singh, and mother-in-law.
