Supreme Court to hear bail plea for Shyamkanu Mahanta

The Supreme Court of India is set to hear a bail plea from Shyamkanu Mahanta, a primary accused in the investigation surrounding the death of singer Zubeen Garg. Mahanta, who organized the North East India Festival in Singapore, is one of seven individuals facing charges related to the incident.

While Singaporean authorities and a state coroner previously ruled Garg’s death on September 19, 2025, during a yacht outing as an accidental drowning with no evidence of foul play, an investigation in Assam led to criminal charges. A fast-track court in Assam has framed murder charges against four individuals, including Mahanta, all of whom have pleaded not guilty. Mahanta is challenging a Gauhati High Court decision that previously rejected his bail application.
