Supreme Court orders restoration of Delhi metro and rail services amid CJP protests
The Supreme Court of India has issued several directives and a show-cause notice to government officials following protests in Delhi. The demonstrations, led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) and the INDIA bloc, demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls.
In a special hearing, a bench comprising Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana found a prima facie case of contempt regarding the alleged violation of previous court orders that prohibited the complete suspension of Metro and rail services. The court directed authorities to ensure that metro and rail services function normally and that internet connectivity remains undisturbed. Additionally, the bench ordered the removal of barricades and the withdrawal of prohibitory restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita around court premises to ensure unhindered access to justice.
In response to the protests, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and Delhi Police implemented significant restrictions, including the closure of several key metro stations such as Rajiv Chowk, Mandi House, and Central Secretariat. The Delhi Traffic Police also issued advisories regarding disruptions at approximately 30 locations across New Delhi and Central Delhi. The Supreme Court has requested a counter-affidavit and compliance report from the concerned authorities by October 13.
