Supreme Court issues notice to Election Commission over voter roll revision plea

The Supreme Court of India has issued notices to the Election Commission of India (ECI), Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, and Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi following a petition by Rahul Gandhi and several INDIA bloc leaders. The petition challenges the ECI's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, alleging large-scale, arbitrary voter deletions and a lack of transparency in the decision-making process.

During the proceedings, the Court expressed strong objections to the conduct of one of the 13 petitioners, noting that the judiciary cannot be “browbeaten” by political demonstrations, such as the recent march to the court premises. The bench, led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, has requested an explanation regarding this conduct at a future hearing.

The Court is also examining related matters, including contempt petitions concerning police actions, internet restrictions, and access to metro stations during recent protests in Delhi. Additionally, the ECI has announced a Special Summary Revision (SSR) across 17 states and union territories to update voter lists and include eligible youth turning 18 in 2027.
