Supreme Court to hear plea on airfare fluctuation controls

The Supreme Court of India is set to hear a plea regarding the regulation of unpredictable airfare fluctuations and ancillary charges imposed by private airlines. The petition, filed by social activist S Laxminarayanan, calls for a robust, independent regulator to ensure transparency and passenger protection within the civil aviation sector.

The Indian government previously informed the court that it has fast-tracked the creation of new rules under the Bharatiya Vayuyan Adhiniyam, 2024, to modernize the aviation industry. The court has previously emphasized the need for the rationalization of airfares and requested that the government present the finalized draft rules.
