Supreme Court to hear plea on mandatory ethanol disclosure in petrol

The Supreme Court of India is scheduled to hear a petition on August 31 regarding the mandatory disclosure of ethanol content in petrol. The plea, filed by Narendra Kumar Goswami, seeks a directive to the Centre to ensure uniform labeling on all petrol pump dispensing nozzles, clearly stating the exact ethanol percentage.

Additionally, the petition requests that fuel invoices legibly disclose ethanol levels. It calls for the creation of a public, searchable database to help vehicle owners determine the compatibility of various ethanol blends with their specific manufacturer, model, and engine type.

The petitioner also seeks the formation of an independent expert committee to investigate the real-world compatibility of E20 fuel with existing vehicle fleets. This committee would be tasked with reporting on impacts regarding fuel efficiency, engine longevity, maintenance costs, warranty implications, and environmental footprints, as well as concerns regarding food security and water consumption related to ethanol production.
