India's Supreme Court dismissed appeals against the Madras High Court order that transferred a probe of alleged transformer procurement irregularities to the Central Bureau of Investigation. The case concerns ten tenders issued between 2021 and 2023 for roughly 45,800 distribution transformers worth about ₹1,183 crore during the tenure of former Tamil Nadu Electricity Minister V Senthil Balaji. NGO Arappor Iyakkam alleged cartel‑like bidding, inflated prices and a loss of roughly ₹397 crore to the state exchequer. The high court criticised the state vigilance agency’s handling of the enquiry and directed the CBI to conduct an independent investigation. Appeals by TANGEDCO and its financial controller V Kasi were rejected, and the Supreme Court emphasized that the probe must proceed without external influence.
